Did you know Gucci is now selling a kurta for Rs 2.5 lakh?
Famous international brands tend to get inspired by various cultures around the world and showcase them. While some of them are extremely beautiful, there are some who get the flak as they come under what is known as 'cultural appropriation.'
Now, Gucci has come up with a clothing item whose exorbitant prices have left desi Twitterati into a tizzy. Called a 'floral kaftan', it is basically an off-white kurta with colourful flowers adorning the areas around the collar. The design is very similar to those that are made in a Kashmiri 'Firan' coat
.
The screenshots were first posted by a Twitter page named 'nalayak'. The 'Floral Embroidery Organic-Linen Kaftan' costs around $3500, which is approximately 2.5 lakhs in Indian rupees!
For obvious reasons, desi netizens were extremely baffled by this item. Not only did the prices shock them, but the design itself infuriated many out there. "Just proves that white people will buy anything if it's branded," one user said.
Many others stated that they could get this made at a much cheaper price. Another user stated the obvious, "bas material dedo i'll get it stitched by my aunt." (Just send me the material, I’ll get it stitched by my aunt; another user stated)
It was quite clear that netizens were not sold by this idea," You can get two of these for 500. Hell, i don't even buy kurtas like these bcz they are not my style. 3,500 dollars for THIS?!"
This is not the first time brands have done such a thing. A lot of accessories and clothes from the Indian culture have been 'adapted' into haute couture that is bought by the westerners on a daily basis in a bid to accept something that was considered 'primitive' not very long ago.
