Were you aware that brand Puma is seeking to produce about 90% of sustainable products?

By 2025, German sportswear brand Puma has pledged to make 90 percent of its products with more sustainable material. Currently, the brand gathers all of its core materials from greener sources for its apparel and accessories like down, viscose, and cotton. Regarding materials such as leather in 2020, more than 97 percent were from certified sources - meaning half of Puma’s products were made from sustainable materials.

So, in keeping an eye on the future, the sportswear company intends to expand its use of recycled materials. As a result, 75 percent of the polyester used in Puma designs will be made from recycled sources. Furthermore, Stefan Seidel, head of corporate sustainability at Puma, made a statement in which he said that “In our sustainability strategy, we focus on making the largest possible positive impact, so our customers know that by buying a Puma product, they buy a sustainably sourced product.” He further added that “We will continue to push hard to live up to our mission statement of being ‘Forever Better.”     

In 2020, Puma teamed up with First Mile to launch a co-created sportswear collection made from recycled plastic, which goes beyond recycling as it is also rooted in “social impact and human connection.” More importantly, The co-branded collection has been designed to help consumers perform their best during any workout and features shoes and apparel, including T-shirts, shirts, jackets, and leggings, which have been made from recycled yarn that is manufactured from plastic bottles collected in the First Mile people-focused network in Taiwan, Honduras, and Haiti. 

With regards to this sustainable fashion collaboration, Seidel had said then that “Even though one of the key benefits of this partnership is social impact, the Puma and First Mile program has diverted over 40 tonnes of plastic waste from landfills and oceans, just for the products made for 2020. It roughly translates into 1,980,286 plastic bottles being reused.”  

He further explained that “The pieces from this co-branded training collection range from shoes, tees, shorts, pants, and jackets—all the apparel is made of at least 83 percent to even 100 percent from the more sustainable yarn sourced from First Mile.” This move into Sustainable Fashion with First Mile as a partner is part of Puma’s commitment to reduce its environmental impact and live up to its code of being “Forever Better.”    

Explaining the collaboration further, Kelsey Halling, head of partnerships at First Mile, added: “We hope that whoever buys this collection feels good about this purchase, not just in terms of choosing something that uses sustainable material, but knowing that those entrepreneurs in the First Mile are being connected to this product because it’s their material going into it.

It is then to continue the promotion of sustainable fashion in the future. Puma has already launched several collections in 2021, focusing on sustainability, including the Exhale collection, which used recycled polyester, made in collaboration with model and climate activist Cara Delevingne.
