Do you know who the winners were at the Grammy 2021?
Before announcing Billie Eilish as the 2021 Grammy winner for Record of the Year, Ringo Starr said, “If you’re making music in our world today, you’ve already won.” It was the perfect sentiment to sum up the 63rd Grammy Awards, which honored musicians in an unprecedented fashion during the primetime show, held live from an outdoor stage outside of the Staples Center arena in Los Angeles with Covid-19 precautions. More importantly, since most of the winners were announced ahead of the show during the livestreamed Premiere Ceremony, there was plenty of time for 20 performances from artists including Doja Cat, DaBaby, Taylor Swift, Roddy Ricch, Bruno Mars and more. Here is then presenting to you a list of the winners at the Grammy 2021 Awards.
A Grammy Night where ‘Women’ took Centre stage:
It was a night full of firsts—but women ruled. All four of the main categories were won by women: Billie Eilish for the aforementioned, Taylor Swift for Album of the Year, H.E.R. for Song of the Year and Megan Thee Stallion for Best New Artist. On the other hand, Beyoncé became the most decorated female artist in Grammy history after winning Best R&B Performance for “Black Parade,” Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for her feature on the “Savage” remix, and Best Music Video for “Brown Skin Girl,” which brought her grand total to 28 awards. The star has now equaled super-producer Quincy Jones' total of 28 Grammys. Only classical conductor Sir Georg Solti has more, with 31. During her acceptance speech, she praised her 9-year-old daughter Blue Ivy Carter, who became the second youngest Grammy winner ever for her writing credit on “Brown Skin Girl.”
The first female rap artist to win at Grammy 2021:
History was created during Grammy 2021 when, Megan Thee Stallion became the first female artist to win the best rap song award. The Houston musician picked up the prize for her breakout hit Savage (Remix), on which Beyoncé delivers a guest verse.
Songs in support of the Black Lives Matter win at Grammy 2021:
Black Parade the R & B song sung by Beyoncé which won her the award for the Best R&B Performance was especially composed to reflect the Black Lives Matter movement. R&B singer H.E.R. won song of the year for I Can't Breathe, which quotes the last words of George Floyd. In fact, accepting the prize, H.E.R. said she never imagined "that my fear and my pain would turn to impact". She further added "That's why I write music," and also said that she was so grateful. The singer, whose real name is Gabriella Wilson, was accompanied by her co-writer Tiara Thomas, and she recalled how they'd written I Can't Breathe "over FaceTime" last summer.
The other major winners at the Grammy 2021:
Other prize-winners included Dua Lipa, who picked up best pop vocal album; and Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande, who became the first female duo to win best pop collaboration for Rain On Me.
Apart from the razzmatazz of the award ceremony, the show also highlighted the plight of music venues by having staff from venues, including New York's Apollo Theater and LA's Troubador, present during some part of the awards.
